Nomination Process/Schedule for Statewide Students

Statewide students are those students living 30 miles or more from the Richmond area.

Statewide Application Process

1. Complete the Nomination Application Form. Students should also include a written statement, describing their interest in art and fashion design, previous experience (none is required), and a description of the garment they would create if they had unlimited funds and materials (minimum of 250 words).

2. Students will receive notification of acceptance via email or phone by October 9.

3. Students who are accepted will receive a packet describing their Stylin’ “challenge.” The Stylin’ challenge is to design a wearable work of art inspired by a piece within the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts collections. Once you review your packet contents, email questions to Jessica Bauserman, Youth Program Coordinator.

4. Participation in weekend workshops, a rendering of your design, along with photos documenting your progress, are required. See the schedule below for details.

Inspiration Workshop and Orientation: Sat, Oct 13, 2012, 10 am – 2 pm (mandatory)
Location: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Fashion Rendering Submission: Tue, Oct 23, 2012 (mandatory)
Create a detailed rendering of your garment’s design. Scan or photograph your rendering and email it to Jessica Bauserman. File should be in .jpg format and not exceed 3 MB. Approved renderings are to be mailed or delivered flat and unfolded to: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Attn: Jessica Bauserman, 200 N. Boulevard, Richmond, VA 23220, by Oct 27, 2012.

Accessory Workshop and VIP Chihuly Exhibition Tour: Sat, Oct 27, 2012, 10 am – 2 pm (optional)
Location: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Garment Construction Image Documentation: Thur, Nov 15, 2012 (mandatory)
Shoot at least three images showing multiple views of your work plus one detail image. Files should be in .jpg format and not exceed 1 MB per file. Email it to Jessica Bauserman.

Completed Garment Model Fitting and Selection Process: Sat, Dec 1, 10 am – noon (mandatory)
Location: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
Garments are subject to disqualification if they are not at least 95 percent complete, fully functional, and family appropriate. All applicants must provide their own model.

Statewide Dress Rehearsal: Sat, Dec 1, noon – 2 pm (mandatory)
Location: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
Students whose garments are deemed runway-ready will participate in the dress rehearsal.

Teen Stylin’ Runway Exhibition: Sun, Dec 9, 2012, 6 – 9 pm (mandatory)
Location: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Judging will take place on the night of the event. For each award category, designers in grades 6 – 8 will compete for a VMFA Fashion Institute certificate valued at $810 and designers in grades 9 – 12 will compete for a free trip to New York City.

The fashion renderings of all Teen Stylin’ participants will be displayed in the Art Education Center Dec 7, 2012 – Jan 30, 2013. Garments of winners and runners-up will also be displayed Dec 11, 2012 – Jan 30, 2013.
