Library Services

The Margaret R. and Robert M. Freeman Library is open to the public Monday – Friday, noon – 5 pm, except for state holidays. The Reading Room offers tables and chairs for research, and four public computers, which can access the Internet, all of the Library’s subscription electronic resources, and the museum’s collections database Pinkney. The Reading Room is also equipped with outlets and wireless Internet for patrons wishing to bring a laptop.

To reach the Freeman Library staff regarding reference queries and requests for services, phone 804.340.1495, fax 804.340.1548, e-mail, or complete a Research Request Form.

Copying, Printing, and Scanning

Black-and-white photocopies or printouts cost $0.20 per page. Color photocopies and printouts cost $0.50 per page. Scans, which will be emailed to the patron, cost $0.50 each. Patrons must pay for copies, prints, or scans with cash only.

Research Packets

For those researchers unable to visit the Freeman Library, information packets on objects in the museum collection can be purchased. Packets up to 10 pages cost $5 and packets 11 – 20 pages, including color copies, cost $10. Patrons may pay with cash, check, or credit card and pick up packets at the Visitor Services Desk in the Atrium during regular museum hours. Requests for packets must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Phone 804.340.1495 or e-mail the Library.

Access Policy

The Freeman Library is non-circulating, except to museum staff. Because its stacks are closed to the public, our staff will retrieve material for patrons. We ask that you bring a pencil for taking research notes when using rare or archival materials.

Beginning February 7, 2012, use of the public computer workstations is limited to one hour of use per day, per patron.

The Freeman Library does not offer interlibrary loan services, but our staff can help patrons find resources locally.

Coat racks and cubbies for purses and bags are available in the Freeman Library’s Copy Room.
