Teen Stylin’ Costume Couture
Dec 7, 2013—Jan 31, 2014 | Opening: Fri, Dec 6, 6—9 pm and Sat, Dec 7, 3—5 pm
Designed for students with a passion for clothing design, studio arts, installation art, and/or sculpture, Teen Stylin’ provided over 80 aspiring Virginia designers with the guidance and assistance to create their own one-of-a-kind, wearable works of art. Student designers worked over the course of eight weeks to create fashion renderings and wearable works of art inspired by predetermined works of art featured in the VMFA permanent collection exploring BIG CINEMATIC IDEAS such as: Wearing the Nation; Beauty & Vanity; Bold, Graphic & Iconic; Culture; The Good Life; Setting & Style; Picturing Power; Making Myths; and Human Stories. Through creative construction and alternative material application, student designers conveyed their own character, plot, and setting through the sheer power of costume. This program and exhibition is offered in conjunction with Hollywood Costume exhibition. Teen Stylin’ is generously sponsored in part by Diane Cox Basheer and B. William Basheer and RBC Wealth Management.
