Making History: 20th Century African American Art
Mar 31, 2012 – Jun 10, 2012Focus Galleries
An innovative collaboration between VMFA and VCU’s Museum Studies graduate program, this student-organized exhibition features more than 50 works by 23 renowned and lesser known African American artists once associated with the pioneering Barnett Aden Gallery (1943 – 1969). A cross-section of art by the internationally acclaimed Elizabeth Catlett forms the core of the exhibition.
Drawn from the local collection of Margaret and John Gottwald, this exhibition of mid-20th-century paintings, sculptures, and works on paper explores black artistic production and patronage through art previously in the collection of the Barnett Aden Gallery, an influential private gallery located in Washington, D.C., and among the first with an integrated stable of artists and patrons.
